Ski Resort

Kitzbuhel, at the eastern end of Tyrol, between Zurich and Vienna, it is one of Austria’s oldest and largest winter-sports resorts considered second only to the Arlberg resorts by expert skiers. Kitzbuhel is the scene of many important international winter sport competitions. The town has every kind of ski slope, a cable railway up the Hahnenkamm, ski lifts, any number of ski runs, including of course, the famous Hahnenkamm run.  There are excellent ski schools with expert instructors and guides. With almost every conceivable facility and type of ski-run, one of which is illuminated at night, plus a wide selection of apres-ski activities which includes a casino, Kitzbuhel is a fashionable but  somewhat expensive resort. For those who must practise economy, there is St Johann in Tyrol a few miles down the valley.

You can take the train to Kitzbuhel from Worgl which is around 18 miles away. The railway goes to the picturesque village of St Johan and then to Kitzbuhel. Kitzbuhel is one of the more popular areas of ski in Austria, situated on the mountains of Hahnenkamm and Kitzbuhler Horn.
At Worgl,  the road from Kitzbuhel joins those from Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Kufstein. Near the German border, Kufstein, overlooked by Geroldseck Castle with its massive round tower, is a considerable winter-sports resort. very popular in summer, being specially noted for the beautiful lakes in the neighbourhood.

One of the many valleys on either side of the River Inn starting from Worgl and leading to the village resorts of Niederau and Oberau. Others follow, including the quiet Alpbach Valley approached from Brixlegg, with its two castles; the wide Zillertal (Ziller Valley), where Mayrhofen, a delightful summer resort, is becoming equally popular in winter and the Achen Valley, best known as a summer resort because of Achensee, its picturesque lake, in a deep cleft of the KarwendeI Mountains, with the lovely village of Pertisau on its western shore.

On the River Inn itself, only a few miles from Innsbruck, is Solbad Hall, once a mining centre, now a spa renowned for its 15th-century Rathaus.
