The tranquil town of Zell am See located in the region of Salzburg is made up of two cities: the city of Kaprun and the city of Zell am See. Kaprun is famous for the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, which is a great ski area. Zell am See has plenty of skiing too as well as the beautiful Lake Zell. Zell am See winter sports resort accommodates important ski competitions such as the World Cup of Alpine Skiing but the resort caters admirably for all levels of skiers. From gentle tree-lined trails to black runs and moguls, the Zell am See-Kaprun 408km ski area packs in plenty of variety, whatever your level. Here too you can find a thermal spa that has a large pool area as well as around six different saunas and baths. The spa also offers massage and other spa treatments. This famous lake resort, south of Saalfelden, has an Alpine lake, Lake Zell, which is about 2 miles long, a mile wide and 225 feet deep. It is a good place to make your headquarters for trips to the places the High Tauern include. Castle Rosenberg in Zell-am-See on the main square is worth seeing, as is the thousand year old church tower. There is also an excellent bathing beach. The main thing is to take a trip by cable car up the Schmittenhoehe. It takes only 15 minutes to reach the top of this mountain. Here there is a small chapel and a meteorological station.
The whole region offers excellent accommodation and a good sparkling climate. A great way to see Zell am See is by hiking. There are many beautiful hiking trails and there are some beautifully sited huts on the trails where you can stay. They all have wonderful little restaurants tha serve traditional food. Alternatively, the Zell am See Youth Hostel is exactly next to the beautiful lake.
